Are We Descended From Extra-Terrestrials? Scientists Seek Proof on Mars

American scientists are developing an instrument to look for life on Mars called the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Genomes (SETG), according to a research proposal recently presented at the IEEE Aerospace Conference in Big Sky, Mont.

The team of researchers believe life on Earth may have descended from Mars, and want to learn more about our biochemical origins by studying the red planet’s history, which has been well preserved by longstanding subzero temperatures.

Christopher Carr and Clarissa Lui from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and associates have created a team and the concept for an instrument to look for proof that life on Earth may have derived from Mars.

"It's a long shot, but if we go to Mars and find life that's related to us, we could have originated on Mars,” said Carr in a MIT press release. “Or if it started here, it could have been transferred to Mars."

Their proposal is based on three premises—Mars once had a climate similar to that here on Earth; an estimated one billion tons of Martian rock have traveled to Earth; and microbes can survive such impacts as well as potentially thousands of years transiting through space from one planet to another.

Furthermore, it is approximately 100 times easier for rocks to travel from Mars to Earth than vice-versa, because of orbital dynamics.
